Taiwan Pre-Trip Preparation: Pocket Wifi or Data SIM Card? (Taichung Part 1)

Monday, October 23, 2017

I'm sure we can all agree that mobile connectivity is one of the top priorities in any of our pre-trip preparation list. Why is it so important? To put it simply, we need the connection! Just so that we could instantly share the travel moments on our socials, not to make people jealous (okay, maybe just a little), but more so to spread all that traveling good vibes to our friends and family! #GoodVibesOnly ;)

To kickstart this blog, we are going to explore one of my favourite countries - Taiwan! And our first stop is Taichung City (台中市)! But first, let's talk about one of the key decisions we have to make when preparing for any trip - Pocket Wifi or Data SIM Card? Based on my research, here are a few options that I've summed up for you!

POCKET WIFI

Option 2: Klook
S$4/day - Pick up @ Boat Quay Singapore / Top up for courier service. Click here for more info.
S$4/day - Pick up @ Taiwan Airport. Click here for more info.

DATA SIM CARD

Option 1: Klook
■ S$21/day - Taiwan Mobile 台湾大哥大 4G Data SIM card. Click here for more info.
■ S$14/day - Chunghwa Telecom 中电信 4G Data SIM card. Click here for more info.

Option 2: Purchase directly over the counter at Taiwan Airport.

Looking at the above breakdown, it's awesome to know that Klook offers both portable wifi and data SIM card services at affordable prices! Their website is pretty comprehensive with all the information that you need to know, so be sure to check out the relevant links above!

As for ChangiRecommends, one thing to note is that payment is made only after the return of the device! They do require a minimal amount of S$1 authorisation hold on your credit card to ensure validity of the account. But other than that, it's pretty cool to know that they have total full faith on their customers haha.

Personally, I prefer data SIM card more than pocket wifi, just so that I can enjoy the flexibility of roaming around on my own (especially when I'm shopping lol) without worrying about losing connection if I'm separated from my traveling buddies. That being said, I did use pocket wifi before and it's all good - as long as I make sure that my buddies know where to find me at a certain time if I'm alone and not holding onto it! Oh, and remember to bring along an extra portable charger just in case your pocket wifi runs out of batt!

Question of the day: What about you? Do you prefer pocket wifi or data SIM card? Also, which portals have you used to book your mobile connectivity? Feel free to share your thoughts and experience in the comments section below! Thank you for reading! :)
